Water-resistant specialty paper offers one way to bring these requirements together—keeping the character of specialty paper while adding resistance to everyday moisture exposure.

What Is Water-Resistant Specialty Paper?
Water-resistant specialty paper is designed to slow down water penetration and maintain better physical stability when exposed to moisture.
Unlike laminated paper, its water resistance does not rely on an additional plastic film. Instead, the performance comes from the paper’s fiber structure and surface treatment.
Compared with ordinary specialty paper, its stronger fiber structure helps resist water penetration. Its higher bulk gives the paper a thicker feel and contributes to its physical stability.
Understanding Paper Bulk
Bulk is useful when comparing papers with the same grammage but different thicknesses. When two papers have the same grammage, the one with greater thickness has a higher bulk and generally provides a more substantial feel and better physical stability.
Bulk (cm³/g) = Thickness (mm) ÷ Grammage (g/m²) × 1,000
For example, a 140 g/m² cotton paper with a thickness of around 0.20 mm has a bulk of about 1.4 cm³/g. A 140 g/m² water-resistant specialty paper with a thickness of around 0.30 mm would have a bulk close to 2.0 cm³/g.

Paper Bags for Rain and Outdoor Use
Paper bags used outdoors can encounter rain, wet surfaces, or accidental splashes during carrying.
For retail bags, takeaway bags, and event packaging, water-resistant specialty paper can help the bag retain its stiffness and shape when exposed to moisture.
140 g/m² and 170 g/m² can work well for everyday paper bags, while 240 g/m² can be considered for larger or heavier bags that need a more substantial structure.

Beverage Packaging Exposed to Condensation
Cold drinks can create condensation on the outside of packaging. Paper labels, sleeves, tags, and other printed components may also come into contact with spills during takeaway or delivery.
Water-resistant specialty paper can help these printed components remain presentable during handling.
Lighter weights such as 95 g/m² and 110 g/m² are suitable for labels, hang tags, and instruction sheets.

Packaging and Printed Materials in Humid Environments
Humidity can affect paper even without direct contact with water.
Cosmetic packaging, product labels, hang tags, instruction sheets, and other printed materials may be stored or used in humid environments. Ordinary paper can soften, curl, or lose some of its visual quality under these conditions.
Water-resistant specialty paper can provide additional protection, helping to protect the printed surface and finishing details from moisture exposure.

Water-Resistant Specialty Paper for Premium and Branded Packaging
For premium branded packaging, gift packaging, and specialty paper packaging, water resistance can be added without covering the paper with a separate film layer. This allows the paper’s texture and tactile quality to remain part of the design while providing some protection against everyday moisture exposure.
It is also important to note that water-resistant does not mean fully waterproof. This type of paper is intended for everyday moisture exposure such as rain, splashes, condensation, and humid environments, rather than prolonged immersion or continuous contact with water.
